What is Panchkarma?

The word Panchakarma comes from Sanskrit:

Pancha = Five

Karma = Therapeutic Procedures

These five classical procedures are designed to help remove accumulated Doshas, restore balance, and support the body’s natural healing processes according to Ayurveda.

Panchakarma is not a general massage or spa therapy. It is a structured Ayurvedic treatment protocol that should always be performed under the supervision of qualified Ayurvedic physicians.

The Five Classical Panchakarma Procedures

1. Vamana

Therapeutic Emesis

What is Vamana?

Vamana is a classical Ayurvedic purification procedure performed under strict medical supervision to eliminate aggravated Kapha Dosha through controlled therapeutic emesis.

May Be Recommended For

* Certain Kapha-dominant disorders
* Selected respiratory conditions
* Certain skin disorders
* Some metabolic disorders

Not Recommended For

* Pregnancy

2. Virechana

Therapeutic Purgation

A controlled purification procedure intended to eliminate aggravated Pitta Dosha through the gastrointestinal tract.

May Be Recommended For

* Some digestive disorders

3. Basti

Medicated Enema Therapy

* Selected musculoskeletal disorders

* Acute diarrhea
* Severe rectal bleeding

Among therapies used for balancing aggravated Vata, Basti is regarded as one of the most important.

4. Nasya

Administration of medicated oil or herbal preparations through the nasal passages.

* Allergic rhinitis
* Migraine (selected cases)
* Head & neck disorders

Avoid When

* Immediately after meals
* Acute fever
* Acute nasal bleeding

The nose is considered the gateway to the head; therefore Nasya is used in appropriate disorders of the head and neck.

5. Raktamokshana

Traditional Ayurvedic bloodletting procedure performed only in selected clinical situations.

May Be Recommended For

Certain skin disorders and selected localized conditions where indicated according to Ayurvedic assessment.

Performed only after proper evaluation.
